Choosing Your First Bird

Cockatiel

There are many factors that go into choosing your first bird.  How much money you have to spend, how much time you have and the space available for the bird are all important considerations.

Do your research before purchasing a bird. Start on-line and create a Top 5 list of birds to consider.  Talk to bird breeders, an avian vet (one who specialized in birds), the local pet store and other bird owners. You will undoubtedly have questions after bring the bird home – make sure you know where to go with your questions.

It’s best for new bird owners to start out with a small breed such as a Cockatiel, Lovebird, Finch or Canary as these birds are easier to handle than their larger relatives.   Choose a bird that has been hand-fed since birth.  These birds are typically better socialized, friendlier and tamer than non hand-fed birds.  Avoid birds that have behavioral problems, been neglected or abused.  It’s difficult for a novice bird owner to turn these birds around.

Birds require a nice home just like their human families.  Provide your new bird with the largest cage that your space and funds can handle.  Outfit the cage with accessories such as stands, little balls and other toys.  The cage should be located where the bird can interact with other family members.

Birds chirp to communicate and you should expect to hear the chirps and other sounds regularly.  Certain bird breeds are noisier than others.  If you live in an apartment, you keep your neighbors happy by selecting a quieter species such as Canaries, Cockatiels, Lovebirds and Finches.

If you have a busy schedule you want to choose a breed that doesn’t require a lot of ongoing socialization such as Finches and Canaries.  No matter what breed, make sure you have the time to regularly feed and play with the bird, clean the toys and cage, and take it to the vet for its checkups.

Lastly, birds can be quite messy.  They drop their food and waste wherever they walk.  It’s not possible to train them like a dog or cat. If you are not able to tolerate cleaning up after them then you should consider another pet.  As with any pet, birds require ongoing, loving attention and care from their owners.

Selecting the right bird will reward you with a very positive, new addition to your household.
