Making Your Own Dog Food - A Healthy and Tasty Alternative

Many people are making their own dog food in order to provide healthy, tasty meals for their canine pets.  Home made dog food can be nutritious and tasty with the right ingredients and process.

Making the dog food at home really isn’t that difficult or expensive and is a great family activity.  There are countless recipies on the internet that provide great ideas.

Before picking a recipe and starting the food preparation it’s important to do your research and consult your vet. All dogs require a core set of nutrients and food groups; however the amount of each will vary depending on the dogs’s breed, age and size.

Dogs require both meat and vegetables for a well balanced diet.  There is no such thing as a vegetarian dog; dogs require protein from meats.  Not including meat products in your pet’s food can lead to health problems later in life.  Careful handling is required for poultry, pork, lamb and fish in order to prevent parasites and bacterial issues affecting your dog. Certain common foods such as raw eggs, fish, and tomatoes must be avoided since they can be harmful and sometimes fatal.

Most pet owners that make their own dog food have small to medium size dogs.  Larger dogs eat much more, making it impractical to prepare food for them unless the owner has a large kitchen and plenty of cold storage.  Since there are no preservatives, the food has a relatively short time span before going bad.  Keeping the food in the refrigerator or freezer will extend its usable time.
