Older Dog Care

Just like people, dogs have special care needs when they grow older. Recognizing that your dog is growing older and providing the necessary checkups, exercise and nutrition will make sure you have a happy canine senior citizen.
Signs of aging include diminished vision, hearing and level of activity. A dog running into things at dusk, that can’t hear you call her for dinner or that can no longer jump into your car are all potential signs of old age. Other common signs include a loss of appetite, dull coat, more frequent urination (sometimes where you don’t want it), breathing problems and weight gain.
While many of these will inevitably come with elderly age, there are many steps you can take to ensure she has a comfortable life in her senior years.
Regular medical checkups and dental care are a top priority. Take advantage of the visit to the vet by asking if your dog’s diet is right for its breed and age. Proper nutrition and weight are very important to a dog’s longevity.
Activities and exercise are key to keeping your dog’s mind and body strong and healthy. Take her on walks, to the park, store and other social gatherings. Recognize that she may not have the same energy as a pup, but still include her in activities like any other important family member.
A little bit of awareness and care is all that’s needed. By providing both, your dog will enjoy fulfilling and happy senior years.
