Reasons to Adopt Your Next Pet

Why should you consider adopting a pet?  Did you know that millions of dogs and cats enter shelters every year?  The Humane Society estimates that between 8 – 10 million dogs and cats entered shelters last year.  Over 50% of these pets had to be euthanized as they couldn’t be placed into a home.

Some were pets of owners who weren’t ready for the responsibility; other pets were unintended offspring of mother and father pets who hadn’t been fixed.  Still others wandered away from their owner’s home and couldn’t be reunited.

All of these pets deserve another chance with a family or individual looking for a fun, loving companion.  When you adopt a pet, you are giving it another chance at life in a happier environment.  Rather than being locked up with hundreds of other unfortunate pets, the dog or cat has the freedom to roam and socialize with its new family.

The owner also benefits by saving the cost of purchasing a pet at the pet store.  When you bring a pet home from the shelter, the pet will typically have had a health checkup and necessary shots.  In addition, the shelter staff can provide information on the type of food to feed the dog or cat and general pet card.

You want to make sure you are ready for the responsibility of pet ownership and can provide a welcoming home.  Happy pets require time and devotion from their families; they must be taken on walks, given the right food, given appropriate pet care, taken to regular checkups with the animal doctor and given lots of love.

There are many possibilities for that new pet.  Do your research and find out which breeds are best for you and family.   The internet, your animal doctor, animal rescue organizations and shelters are excellent sources for information.   Create a 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice and then visit your local shelters.  Chances are that you will come home with a new family member and make a pet very happy!
